Our Expectations of You
Farm work is one of the most rewarding endeavors a person ever undertakes.
Though farm work is always gratifying, it is also at times dirty, sweaty, buggy and
difficult.  When such work occurs in the company of others of like mind in a
beautiful, peaceful and natural environment, those inconveniences seem trivial.

We want your experience to be as positive and beneficial for you as it is for us.
This is why we ask all interns to have a positive attitude, a true desire to learn
and a willingness to work hard.  In return, we will take time to answer questions,
share our skills and welcome you into our farm family.  Rest assured, we don’t
pretend to know everything.  We want to learn from you, too!

You can expect to be doing one of the following at any given time (including but
not limited to):  hand weeding, mulching, harvesting, building, washing veggies,
hoeing, planting, packing CSA boxes, etc.  As much as possible, we try to assign
you tasks in an area that interests you.  However, at times there may be jobs that
require all of us to pitch in regardless of interest.

We need to have reliable volunteers because we plan projects based on who is
coming to the farm on any given day.  Please let us know as much in advance as
possible if you are unable to volunteer during a time that you have committed
to.

What to Wear
Dress for the weather. It is always a good idea to layer your clothing. After all,
this is the UP. It may be cool when we start work in the morning and be blazing
hot a short while later or vice versa. A light-colored, light-weight, long-sleeved
shirt is always a good idea along with a wide-brimmed hat. Footwear should
cover your feet completely and may get wet or muddy. No sandals please.

What We Provide
Water, tools, natural bug repellent, bug head nets, wide-brimmed hats.  Meals
will be provided on the days that you work as well as an adequate amount of
produce and flowers to take home.  *Produce won’t really be on until late June
and flowers until late July.

The Gear You Need
(If you are a regular volunteer, you may store your gear at the farm rather than
carting it back and forth to home.)
1. Sunscreen. We recommend long-sleeved shirts and wide-brimmed hats over
conventional sunscreens.
2. Water bottle.
3. Gloves (depending on what we will be doing that day).
4. Rain gear (we work rain or shine).
5. Old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, ripped, stained, etc.
6. Appropriate footwear (no sandals).  Shoes and/or boots.  Investing in a pair of
waterproof muck boots is a good idea.
7. A smile and a positive attitude.
8. Snacks. (We realize that not everyone shares our belief in a mindful vegan
philosophy.  However, we politely request that you pack a snack that is as “veg-
friendly” as is convenient for you.  We are happy to provide lots of yummy
recipes!)

Our Policy on Substances & Chemicals
Please refrain from the use of alcohol and other drugs while working at the
farm.  Smokers will be asked to smoke out of sight of farm visitors and other
workers.  Please do not use chemical bug sprays as they may taint the flavor and
compromise the chemical-free nature of our produce.  We gladly provide natural
insect repellant and head nets as needed.
